Hundreds of Cats, Thousands of Cats...

Millions and billions and trillions of cats.

Nah. But there were a lot of cats this week and I got to pet several
and it made me happy.

Tuesday Sister E...... called us and said
she'd be home and we could stop by if we wanted. Augh, I feel for her.
She's just having a hugely rough time because her husband is a
non-practicing Jehovah's Witness, but his family is suuuuper active
and just treats her like less than nothing. :( I just want her to have
the blessings of the gospel but I'm not sure she quite realizes she
needs it yet. I also held their smol bearded dragon. And learned that
her 15 year old son breeds ball pythons, which I'm SO EXCITED ABOUT.

We had dinner with Sister Lobrot and her kids (Brother Lobrot was
stuck in traffic in Orlando). She is the closest thing I've seen to
the kind of parent I want to be. And her kids are so dang smart and
articulate.

I had to give a training in District Meeting on Wednesday, on faith
and how we can help our investigators to gain it. Cobbled together
some thoughts. Got some inordinate praise. I really liked a thought
that Elder Jensen, one of the Zone Leaders, shared. He talked about
the Apostles waiting for Christ when he was in Gethsemane, and that
they fell asleep. Then he said that this is an incredibly hard journey
for our investigators. We have to accompany them. We cannot fall
asleep.

Sister Sproge (senior) came out with us! Aaand our appointments
cancelled/didn't show. :( So we visited the Ackermans. Or... Sister
Sproge visited with Sister Ackerman. And they both looove to talk.
We went to mutual with K...... again and played chair soccer.
Basically it's just a free-for-all where you have to guard your chair
and hit other people's with the ball. And if it's hit you have to sit
down, but you can still kick or throw the ball. 'Twas fun.

Thursday service at the HUM, in which we paid much more attention to
the feral cats. Someone that they know better came out, so one of them
came up to me and made all these little cute half meow and trill
noises. Also. There is a skunk that lives there. It's descented and it
showed up after Hurricane Matthew. I'll get a picture this week. And
hopefully will get to touch it.

We tried something new this week because knocking doors has been
failing us. We drew in chalk in a park! Just wrote an uplifting
message and put "Mormon.org" at both ends. *shrug* hopefully it
brightened someone's day.

Friday was planning. Dunno.
We were supposed to have dinner with Sister W..... but she didn't
answer her door or phone. And we were worried because she's sort of
old and has health issues. But we went on our way and got our own
dinner... then she called us back and said she had forgotten and asked
if we could come back. Haha. Two dinners.

Saturday we went to a memorial service at a new ward
building. It was for the mother of a less active, and he had requested
that Sister Brady and Sister Sorensen sing, when they were on
exchanges. We all ended up singing. And man it was an odd funeral.
They were mostly nonmembers. So glad that we have the Plan of
Salvation. So glad.

We had dinner with the Sproges (the younger) and my BEST FRIEND BILLY
BOY the pomeranian.

Sunday was wonderful. I love the Sacrament. We also had a Ward Council
meeting that was mostly focused on missionary work, which was
wonderful. In the past, we've kind of been shoved off to the side.
Bishop Baenziger really really wants to help us help the ward. Such a
good man.

We had dinner with Sister Fuller, who I had never formally met but had
probably seen. She has TEN CATS. One of them GAVE ME A HUG. It was
glorious.

Then the Corders came and helped us out with some household things we
needed doing.

Ahh. It's been a week. This transfer has fairly flown. Here's a
scripture I found this week.

Doctrine and Covenants 90:11 "For it shall come to pass in that day,
that every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue,
and in his own language, through those who are ordained unto this
power, by the administration of the Comforter, shed forth upon them
for the revelation of Jesus Christ."

Which I've interpreted to mean, not only their own actual language,
but maybe in a different form or medium that they're more comfortable
with. Like facebook. SHARE THE GOSPEL.
I dunno.

I love y'all. Have a good week.

Love,

Sister Stevenson

I'm Having Fun

"I'm having fun, don't bother me." -Bishop Baenziger

Sisters Stevenson and Sorensen

Good day, Underlings. It is time for you to read about my life.

This week, I was a missionary. It was really weird. Instead of people calling me by my first name, they all called me "Sister Stevenson" and there was a thing in our car that yelled at us when we drove over the speed limit. How pompous.

I had to talk to a lot of ordinary people I don't know and some that I've met like once fed me because they pity me. This pleases me.

One thing of note that happened was that I got to sit by the most majestic human in a meeting where several missionaries pretended like they knew more than the rest of the other missionaries. This majestic human spoke many words of wisdom and I want to take some of her DNA and study it so that I can be just like her one day.

I like this missionary thing. I think I shall continue to do it for a season. You all must try it too. This is a demand.

Salutations,

"Sister" (lol) Stevenson

Okay but here's the real email.  ▲That was written by Sister Lamborn.

This week was a ton of finding.

Tuesday we had a lesson with Tam..., a former that we'd contacted a week or so ago. She's always been interested in learning but has never had time. Then last Monday we asked if she'd read the pamphlet, and she said no, but that we could tell her about it when we came over on Tuesday. Set up the appointment for us. :) We kept our lesson short and simple. She just wanted to know how to pray, and if the First Vision really happened, and it was super sweet.

Then we got a terrifying text from Mel..., one of our new investigators. "I read your pamphlet ,and for some strange reason, I'm afraid of you guys. I also did a bit of research on Mormons and it scares me after what I discovered." We were FREAKING OUT. But he called us and we were able to clear up most of it, and even got a return appointment out of that call! Phew. Seeing him tomorrow. Pray for us.

In the evening we met a less active YSA named Bea.... She's from Brazil and she's studying to be a pilot. And she's awesome. Still believes it, but it's just cheaper to do the flying she needs to for school on Sundays. :T They have to pay like $100 per hour to fly.

Wednesday was District Meeting, at which I am now the designated piano player. The piano could technically play itself, but I hate how it sounds.

We had dinner with the Hintons, and Sister Hinton said that because we've been coming over for dinner regularly, she's worked up the courage to talk to some of her friends about the gospel! Woo!

Cleaned ALL THE THINGS at the HUM on Thursday. Well. Not all of them. But we did quite a lot. There's a cat that's always sleeping on the roof there and I love it.

Dinner with Sister Hill and the Grimes kids. They are so. Funny. She kinda just sits to the side and we try and get them to talk and laugh at their antics and remarks.

We met Brother Schmidt and his girlfriend.  He's been trying to come back to church more, and she comes with sometimes but really isn't interested. There's a sign on their front door that says, "Sisters come in, you are always welcome here!" Talked about Civil War reenactments and Riley's Farm with them. :)

Friday we planned, as is normal. The new planning guidelines are so much better than the Preach My Gospel ones. We also talked with the Elders on what we can do to involve the members in the ward and get them excited about missionary work.

We finally saw K.... (14 year old convert)! They keep disappearing on the days we usually go over. We talked a lot in planning about how we can help them progress. Her parents came outside too and we involved them in the lesson. It was awesome. :)

Saturday we made cookies and delivered them to some of our people. We talked to Les...some more about the Book of Mormon, heard some more of her interesting beliefs... But she had read, and she's going to keep reading, so that's awesome. We really feel like if she gets a witness that it's true, that she'll want to progress herself.

Disturbed a bird who made a nest in the wreath on someone's front door. There's lil eggs in there! :)

We had dinner with the Erskines and Lobrots. And it was one of my favorite dinners ever. Cafe Rio ish food, but we could build it ourselves. ;-; I was so happy. And so full. They are all just awesome though. The kind of people that treat you like family. We talked to them about some of our ideas in getting members involved in missionary work. One of them felt more comfortable with the idea of talking to people over Facebook. Another preferred to give someone a physical Book of Mormon. Both are awesome ways to share the gospel.

Sunday all of K....'s family came to church!!!!!!!!! WOOOOO. I sat with their young son, so I wasn't super focused during the meeting. Just keeping him nice and happy so his parents could focus on the meeting. :) Also had a nonmember walk in and she just so happened to sit next to me. She was there for a World Religions class. I was able to give her a pamphlet at least.

We both spoke in the YSA branch's Sacrament meeting. I'm not a huge fan of giving talks, but that was probably the best one I've given. And the most comfortable I've been. We had two more World Religions students come. The 2nd counselor in the Branch Presidency is in the class and told the other students that there was an LDS church close by, haha.

We had an awesome dinner with Bishop and Sister Baenziger, Brother Nuviadenu, and the Elders in which we talked more about our ideas for involving the members. So great.
"If all our sins smelled, we'd have a stinky congregation." -Sister Baenziger

Today we went to the speedway and took a tour, courtesy of Brother Nuviadenu. What a good guy. I had no idea what was going on, but it was cool nonetheless. Fun facts: the start/finish line isn't flat. I walked up it. It's a pretty good incline. The turns are like 31 degrees? And they're taken at like 160 mph. If you're going slower than 70 mph, you'll be pulled down. On the not-flat flat parts, they go like 200-202 mph.

I still don't comprehend people spending hundreds of dollars to sit amid 101,500 people for 5-7 hours and watch cars. But hey. When in Rome.

Anywho, have a fantastic week, y'all. Prayerfully commit this week to sharing the gospel with someone. Maybe someone you've been thinking about? Maybe look through your friends list on social media? Share a video or give a Book of Mormon or bear your testimony. :) It's a good thing to share.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

Hey there, I'm Sister Stevenson. I've been on my mission here in Florida for about 8 months, serving in this area for about 2. And today I'm going to talk about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So as missionaries there are three main lessons that we teach: The Restoration, the Plan of Salvation, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The what, the why, and the how of the gospel.

The Restoration is what makes us different. What we have, which is the Priesthood, the Book of Mormon, the same exact organization that Christ established in His ministry on the earth.

The Plan of Salvation is why we're here and why this message is relevant at all. We know where we came from and where we want to go, which is why we invite all to listen and learn.

So the Gospel of Jesus Christ is how we accomplish that. And it's laid out pretty simply in the fourth Article of Faith. "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

First, when we teach this, though, we emphasize Christ. He is or He should be the center of literally everything. Everything we teach, everything we do, everything we are. It is because of Christ that any of these things even matter. 2 Nephi 9 is an amazing chapter in the Book of Mormon that outlines how awesome and necessary the Atonement of Jesus Christ is, and I'd love to read the entire thing, but I'll just read some from it.

"Wherefore, it must needs be an infinite atonement--save it should be an infinite atonement this corruption could not put on incorruption. Wherefore, the first judgement which came upon man [or, the fall which separated us from God] must needs have remained to an endless duration.
...
"O the wisdom of God, his mercy and grace! For behold, if the flesh should rise no more our spirits must become subject to that angel who fell from before the presence of the Eternal God, and became the devil, to rise no more.

"And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself" (2 Nephi 9:7-9).

Terrifying. I love these verses though, because they highlight the incredible contrast of the love and sacrifice of Christ for us. Verses21-22 state:

"And he cometh into the world that he may save all men if they will hearken unto his voice; for behold, he suffered the pains of every living creature, both men, women, and children, who belong to the family of Adam.

"And he suffered this that the resurrection might pass upon all men, that all might stand before him at the great and judgement day."

And verse 18:

"The righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in the Holy One of Israel, they who have endured the crosses of the world and despised the shame of it, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and their joy shall be full forever."

So we have this amazing redemptive power that's offered to us through Jesus Christ. But how do we access that? How do we make sure that we're on the path that leads us to that mercy and grace talked about, and use the Atonement in our own lives? That's what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is for. That's why it's the how.

First, those scriptures talked about hearkening unto the voice of the Savior, or believing in Him. So that first step, that first principle, is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

On the most basic level, faith is belief. Believing in Christ, believing that He is your Savior, trusting that those things are a fact.

Alma 32:21 says, "And now as I said concerning faith--faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true."

We also like to talk a lot about faith being an action word. That we have to do something to make our faith alive and make it more than a passive belief. Quite literally, faith is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. And sometimes when you exercise physically, it hurts, and it's hard, and you're left feeling sore. But it makes you stronger the next time. The same with faith. Sometimes trusting in the Lord and His promises through our lives and our trials is hard, and it hurts. But we're promised that that pain will be taken away, and we'll be made stronger.

Faith is kind of like having an exercise buddy to motivate you and help you accomplish your goals. Except your exercise buddy is Jesus. And He's the best. And you know He wants to help you be as strong as you possibly can be. That metaphor kind of got off track but you get the idea.

So that faith leads us to want to access those blessings, to want to come closer to our Savior and Father in Heaven. And that's repentance.

Everything that brings us closer to God is us repenting. We've had some missionary meetings recently where the root words for the word repentance were discussed. The Latin is like a negative thing. Penitence, punishment. The Greek word is more like a change in yourself. The original Hebrew word means to turn back. That's what repentance is, is turning back to God. Aligning our wills with His, and trying our best to correct any things that would keep our course from pointing straight to Him.

Doctrine and Covenants 58:42-43 says, "Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more.

"By this ye may know if a man repenteth of his sins--behold, he will confess them and forsake them."

My faaaavorite line in Preach My Gospel about repentance reads, "Repentance includes forming a fresh view of God, ourselves, and the world."

So repentance is just this amazing thing that shows us how incredibly merciful God is, and also allows us to move on, forgive ourselves, and become more.

Faith and repentance prepare us for the first ordinance of the gospel, the covenant of baptism. Covenants are two-way contracts, and in gospel terms, they're sacred promises between God and man. We promise to do things that Heavenly Father has asked of us, and He promises blessings in return. He wants so bad to give us those blessings, but our getting them is entirely conditional on our choosing to follow the terms He has set.

In Mosiah 18:8-10 we learn those promises and promised blessings:

"...and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light;

"Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—

"Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?"

So we promise to take Christ's name upon us and stand as a witness of Him always, to support our fellow men, to keep the commandments... And we are promised an abundance of the Spirit. Also that we will be made entirely clean; all mistakes or sins are washed away completely. And we get to renew that commitment every week as we take the Sacrament, and receive again those promised blessings from God, and we're told that we will "always have his Spirit to be with [us]."

Which is so cool. After we're baptized by water, we get what the scriptures call a baptism by fire, or of the Spirit. (I have a great visual for this if any of y'all want to see it after church sometime.) In other words, the gift of the Holy Ghost. We get one of the coolest gifts God could ever give us. A constant guide and friend and help.

We can definitely feel the Spirit before this, which is how we gain faith and desire to repent and be baptized in the first place. But this is that promise of having it "more abundantly". As long as we're living righteously we can have the Holy Ghost with us all the time. I think sometimes we forget just how cool that is.

Moroni's promise at the end of the Book of Mormon is among the most used scriptures by missionaries. Moroni 10:5 reads, "And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things."

All. Things. The Holy Ghost can testify of the truth of literally anything to us. He also warns us, directs us, and comforts us, which is pretty important for this last piece of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which isn't mentioned in the fourth Article of Faith:

Enduring to the end. I have a rough time with this one sometimes, since this is the step that I'll be stuck on indefinitely. Sometimes I think of enduring as simply dragging along to the finish line. That's 100% not what it is. I came across a quote from Elder Kevin W. Pearson of the Seventy in the April 2015 General Conference:

"Enduring to the end is a hallmark of true discipleship and is essential to eternal life. But when trials and challenges come our way, we are often told to simply “hang in there.” Let me be clear: to “hang in there” is not a principle of the gospel. Enduring to the end means constantly coming unto Christ and being perfected in Him."

In simple terms, enduring to the end is just repeating those previous steps. Developing and exercising faith, repenting, taking the Sacrament to renew the covenants made at baptism, and following the guidance we have from the Holy Ghost. It's faithfully following and consistently learning, changing, and growing.

I can testify of this pattern of the gospel. That as we continually exercise our faith, unto repentance, keep and renew our covenants, and seek for the direction of the Holy Ghost, we will be given power and strength to faithfully endure to the end. I have seen that power in my own life. It's been an amazing gift to me, and it can and will change the life of anyone who chooses to follow the gospel and allow it into their life. I can testify of the love our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ have for each and every one of you individually. I feel that love for God's children work through me daily as I try to teach people this soul-changing pattern of living. They love you so much. They want to help you. And They will, as you keep your covenants with them and continually seek to draw closer to Them. You will feel of that power and that love.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

☀️☔️ A Week of Things and People ☔️☀️

In which I confuse everyone who has already seen Sister Smith's email.

FLORIDA?

Anyway. I have a lot less time now than if I had written this email instead of taking a nap. So let's get to it!

It's rained a toooon this week and it makes me the happiest.

Also I've been using this emoji a lot this week: 😐

Tuesday we did service at the HUM. Put some stamps on some envelopes. Sorted some newspapers. ("YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO READ THOSE" -Sister Sorensen)

We then were like an hour late to dinner because the ward clerk had previously cheated with his address so he'd be in a different ward. And so we were at his other house ages away instead of at his actual house down the street from us. 😐 They looooove to talk.

On Wednesday we went to Young Women's with K..., (the 14 year-old convert). Apparently there's a thing in our county right now where people are painting rocks and then hiding them all over. If you find one you can post where you found it, then either keep it or hide it again. And so we painted rocks! I painted a dragon. Pictures to come. I have yet to hide it though.

Thursday was Zone Conference! My original quad was reunited for a brief second and several photobombed pictures. :) :)

Zone Conference was, not surprisingly, all about Facebook. Focusing on obedience and our purpose and I don't even remember. Learned lots of stuff from the Spirit that wasn't actually stated. Which is always the best.

Later in the day we met a cute less active sister. She's still faithful and has a testimony... she's just recently been supporting her young grandson in his efforts to find faith... in the Catholic church. 😐

Friday. Planning. Cleaning out area book. And our phone which is full of useless contacts.

Uh. Went to a ward party for a sec.

Also met the dad of an old referral who let us almost get to the end of the Restoration, where we were about to invite him to do something, before telling us he was a preacher but he likes to learn. 😐 sooo. Maybe he'll read the Book of Mormon. Maybe.

Saturday was filled with silly animal encounters that entirely changed my attitude and thus the course of my day.

First, we met the Trents. She's less active because she runs a bar and it keeps her up at odd hours. That's the reason. 😐 But she has a dog that is my spirit animal. A chihuahua named Violet who doesn't really like people, or leaving her bed. Looks uncomfortable when she's getting attention. But kind of likes it also so she doesn't leave.

Then we met a less active who left the church and was a minister in another church. 😐 But is less active there now too. She was super sweet and we think she still has a testimony somewhere in there. She initially just had some struggles with testimony on certain things, and followed her husband when he went less active. :( She also wanted help with her computer, haha. And she has two sweet fat old dogs named Sir Loin and Lady Fingers. Haha.

Dinner with Sister Gr..., a recent convert who continues to be the sweetest. And her dog who is basically a teddy bear and makes the cuuuutest noises. He growls when you pet him. Precious. We talked to her about the temple because she has one more temple prep class left!!!!! YAY!

THEN WE SAW KITTENS ON A ROOF. KITTENS. ON. A. ROOF. I didn't manage a picture but I did get one of a dog under a garage door.

Also we met a guy named Nicolas who was like, "What are you doing? Sharing a message? I'll listen to that." Then gathered his family for prayer. And is feeding us tonight.

Sister Baenziger brought K.... to church on Sunday! :D Bless the Baenzigers. I haven't heard their name pronounced the same twice.
Um.

We're giving talks next week. 😐
I don't remember what else happened.

Today we just drove around and went shopping with the STLs. :) Which is partly why this email is so darn late.
Anyway.

Have a great week and look for the positive things! Don't be afraid to ask someone else for help if you're having a rough time seeing the good. That's what friends are for. :) Also counting your blessings is definitely a thing that works.

Love y'all.
